Adult Learn to Sail

Black Rock Yacht Club runs an Adult Learn to Sail (ALTS) program twice yearly, beginning in February and October. This Sunday morning course is aimed at adults and older teenagers wishing to learn the basics of sailing and gain confidence on the water.

The ALTS course is designed to be fun with a strong social element. Over the 8-week program, enthusiastic and qualified instructors will teach you and 11 other like-minded students how to skipper and crew the Clubs training dinghies safely on the water. Once you learn the basic techniques of sailing, with further training, these skills can be translated to any size yacht.

During the course, through both theory sessions and on-water sessions you'll learn:

  1. How to rig a dinghy
  2. The basics of maneuvering in relation to the wind and waves
  3. How to deal with the close proximity of other boats
  4. How to right the boat after a capsize.
  5. & Much more!

On successful completion of the course, participants will qualify for the Australian Sailing “Start Sailing 1 and 2” certificate .

BRYC is passionate about sailing and is keen to support new sailors . Many opportunities exist for new graduates to continue sailing at BRYC . They are invited to join the “Learn to Race Pathway program (taught in Pacers and 125’s). Graduates may also be offered the opportunity to receive coaching in a single handed Sabre.
